What we might accomplish by engaging in our local communities

چکیده
OBJECTIVE To describe the potential benefits of a clinician engaging in the same community in which her/his patients live. METHODS Using a commentary format, the author describes the potential benefits of having clinicians engage in the same community in which her/his patients live. RESULTS When we, clinicians, spend time in the same communities where our patients live, we have the opportunity to enhance our patients' lives and our teaching in three key ways. For one, we bring our medical expertise into the community. Secondly, we bring our expertise back to our practice and research inquiries. Finally, we teach trainees, who tend to be transient, about community assets and challenges. CONCLUSION As we learn more about the importance of social determinants of health-describing how poverty, neighborhood, access to healthy food, and education, all play important roles in health-having an educator who can teach about the specific local community assets and influences on health may be as important as teaching which antibiotic to use. Academia and funders could increase this kind of knowledge acquisition and dissemination by rewarding and valuing these clinicians.

The Society of the Spectacle Revisited: Separation, Schooling, and the Pursuit of Dangerous Citizenship
In this paper we set out to accomplish several goals. Primarily, we seek to re-interpret Guy Debord’s (1967) work The Society of the Spectacle in light of modern-day schooling, principally within North America (although we recognize the global connectivity inherent in any current discussion of formal education). In addition, we aim to utilize Debord’s conceptualizations as a series of means and...

There have been many calls for community participation in MRV (measuring, reporting, verification) for REDD+. This paper examines whether community involvement in MRV is a requirement, why it appears desirable to REDD+ agencies and external actors, and under what conditions communities might be interested in participating. It asks What's in it for communities? What might communities gain from s...
متن کاملDALD:-Distributed-Asynchronous-Local-Decontamination Algorithm in Arbitrary Graphs
Network environments always can be invaded by intruder agents. In networks where nodes are performing some computations, intruder agents might contaminate some nodes. Therefore, problem of decontaminating a network infected by intruder agents is one of the major problems in these networks. In this paper, we present a distributed asynchronous local algorithm for decontaminating a network. In mos...
متن کاملA new role for computer-mediated communication in engaging teacher learning within informal professional communities
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) implementations, in particular among teachers, have not lived up to public expectations. This study examines some reasons for this and outlines a conceptual and methodological framework for characterizing the engagement of experienced and novice teachers in informal network-based professional learning communities. I postulate sustainability to positively co...
